The Echoes visited once again for another Glorybound Christian Entertainment event at the Goshen United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall in Stella, Kentucky.

Founded by the late Joe Lawrence, the event still continues, even after Joe's recent promotion to Heaven, through the on-going efforts of Renee Taylor and Pat Lea. April Arnold, a local United Methodist pastor, has taken over Joe's duties of delivering a short inspirational message during the break in singing.

The Echoes presented Renee and Pat a plaque in memory of Joe, which we hope will serve to remind people of Joe's love for gospel music, the Gospel itself, and above all his love for Jesus.

We shared the evening with several soloists, including April Arnold. Since it is the Christmas Season, several Christmas songs were sung. But since Christmas songs aren't usually a part of our repertoire, we decided to go caroling. This took the form of inviting a few of our friends, including the other singers and the Erwins (of the WKGMA) to stroll to different tables (houses) and sing carols to the inhabitants at each "house." It was fun to go caroling again, and most of all to sing about our Saviour's birth.

And while we miss Joe, we're happy to be a small part in keeping his legacy going in the form of the Glorybound Christian Entertainment events.

WKGMA Fall Convention

The Echoes participated in the WKGMA Fall Convention, held once again at Trinity Baptist Church, in Paducah, KY. Good reports came from the Thursday night portion of the Convention, with several saying that the Holy Spirit was really present that night. Well, Friday night was no different, as 13 soloists, trios and quartets sang the Glory down.

The Echoes were fifth on the program and had to make a last-minute substitution of our planned song list. One of the previous groups sang one of the songs we had planned, so it was a simple substitute to another song that wove in the message of the Gospel.

David was in the midst of an active kidney stone attack, but didn't let that slow him down, as he took the lead on "It Pays To Pray," Twila then challenged everyone with "Preach The Word." We ended our set with a happy - and snappy - thought of going to Heaven, with "Yes I Am."

The enthusiastic congregation, who freely and demonstratively worshiped as the songs were sung, made the evening a blessing for everyone -- including the Echoes.

You just can't beat Gospel singing with God's people.

Buena Vista Community Church

The Echoes enjoyed an afternoon of worship with our friends at Buena Vista Community Church, in Harrisburg, IL.

David's sister, Linda, is a member at Buena Vista, and since October is Pastor Appreciation Month, she had asked if we could prepare a music video honoring their Pastor, G.E. Coultas. So, David created a video accompaniment, and we sang the Rodney Griffin song, "Faces," while photos depicting the years of Pastor Coultas' service to God illustrated the words of the song.

If you're not familiar with "Faces," it speaks about the lives that each of us influence throughout our lives, even though we do not in most cases realize it. One day, when we get to heaven, those faces will be revealed to us. Another way to put it, the song is a condensed version of the perennial Christmas favorite movie, "It's A Wonderful Life," starring Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey.

Pastor Coultas was surprised, and there were few dry eyes in the congregation at the conclusion of the song. As the final frame in the video stated over a photo of Pastor Coultas preaching from the pulpit, "Well Done, Thou Good and Faithful Servant."

Seven Mile Baptist Church Homecoming

The Echoes finished up our busy weekend with a return to Seven Mile Baptist Church to help them celebrate their homecoming service. Seven Mile's homecoming began with the Echoes presenting the Gospel in Song in a 45-minute series of songs. Then a guest minister brought a challenging sermon about the need to spread that Gospel throughout the world.

It was great to see Mylon Hulsey and his family at the service. Mylon sang with the Echoes in the late 90's and the early 2000's. So it was sorta like an Echoes homecoming also.

After the message, we all did what you do at homecomings -- ate a delicious meal.

It was a good way to end a great weekend of singing about Jesus.

Aurora Fall Festival Gospel Sing

Continuing a busy weekend, the Echoes traveled to Aurora, Kentucky, to participate in the Aurora Fall Festival. Aurora Baptist Church, located right on the busy parade route and in the middle of a lot a crafts, flea markets and other attractions, has sponsored a food tent and gospel singing for many years. And the Echoes have been a part of the singing for those many years, also.

Various WKGMA member groups participated, beginning in mid-morning, before the parade, and then starting up once again right after the parade passed. The Echoes were part of the afternoon contingent,

God blessed us with a beautiful Fall day. We trust that He also blessed those who heard the message in song.

WBCE Benefit Singing

One of the blessings we receive is the opportunity to help raise money for worthy causes. We've done this for all of the 41 years of the Echoes' existence. The latest occasion was a benefit for WBCE Radio, in Wickliffe, Kentucky. WBCE is a non-profit Christian station that helps spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Western Kentucky, Southern, Illinois, Western Tennessee and Southwestern Missouri.

The Echoes joined about 40 other various singing groups, ranging from soloists to quartets for a 5-hours extravaganza of Gospel Music. And as the old saying goes, "a good time was had by all."

Fluorspar Day

It's always interesting to "go home." And a lot of old memories were brought to mind for David, as the Echoes appeared at the Memorial Band Pavilion to sing the Gospel at Fluorspar Day, in Rosiclare, Illinois.

David was a 1967 graduate of Rosiclare High School and spent quite a lot of time around the Main Street area over the years. But today, the old Capitol Theater is replaced by the Band Pavilion, some of the buildings are no longer there, and the mining industry is a shadow of its former self. Yet the people still gather each year to celebrate Community.

The Echoes participated by singing the never-changing message of the Gospel in song, while down the street a little ways, the young children played on inflatables, and at the levee, Hardin County's various volunteer fire departments conducted water battles.

No doubt, a good time was had by all, and traditions still continue. Nothing really changes all that much -- and God's Love and the message that His Son, Jesus, brings will always be the same.

The Echoes are blessed to be able to mark having sung that never-changing message for 41 years this year -- almost as long as Fluorspar Day has celebrated the Community of Rosiclare.

WKGMA Mini-Convention

The Echoes took part in a WKGMA Mini-Convention held at House of Prayer, LaCenter, KY. Even though it's called a "mini" convention, there were a good number of WKGMA member groups and soloist who shared their message in song. And even though WKGMA stands for "West Kentucky Gospel Music Association," the membership includes groups from Illinois (the Echoes and others), Missouri, Indiana, and now Tennessee.

It's amazing, but would you believe that the messages in the songs are the same, no matter where the group is from. That message is about Jesus and His Love for us.

We appreciate the House of Prayer in hosting the event. We also enjoyed the finger food fellowship that was on-going during the convention. It's good to sing, and then visit with other WKGMA members during the evening.

The next time you hear about a WKGMA convention, be sure to plan to attend. You'll hear some great Gospel music from a variety of groups, soloists, and styles. But most importantly, you'll also be ministered to. Ain't God Good!!

Azotus Annual Homecoming

The old church sits by a dusty gravel road, in a remote part of southern Pope County, Illinois. In its earlier days, it was a beacon of Christ in a vibrant community for many years, after its founding in 1848.

But today, those who once had a connection to Azotus Baptist Church gather just once a year to reminisce, take care of cemetery business and worship once again in the old church.

The old upright piano has a good number of keys that no longer work. But it still provides enough music, beautiful in its own way, that the gathering congregation can still sing along to the old hymns of the faith.

The coal or wood-burning stove no longer is present to heat the room. But that's no longer necessary anyway, in the hot months of August. The pews are unpadded, and the unscreened windows make welcome wasps and other insects who sometime join the congregation. Electricity is no longer present, but the guest minister doesn't need a sound system in the little building anyway.

But God is still present in that little, plain building. He dwells in the hearts of those faithful people who still gather once a year to worship Him in this place.

And the Echoes count it a honor to be a small part of this yearly service for the last 39 years. These days, everyone gathers under the old maple tree that very likely was there at the beginning in 1848. We all eat a delicious pot-luck lunch, and the Echoes then sing. Today, that old maple tree is showing its age, the results of ice storms, winds, and just old age in general.

But God is still present. And He always will be -- even after that little old church building beside of the road is no more.

Gospel Mission Tabernacle

We enjoyed another great Sunday afternoon of Gospel singing and worship with our friends at the Gospel Mission Tabernacle, in Golconda, Illinois. Pastor Tim Green and his congregation made us feel at home, as always.

Actually, we'd feel at home anyway, since we have been singing from time to time at the Gospel Mission since the mid-70's, when it was located across the street from the courthouse in Golconda. And the Gospel Mission is the home church for our own Sharon and Dorris Thomas.

We began the afternoon with a delicious potluck dinner, even though it was not a homecoming-type event. And, as usually is the case, it's too easy to eat too much, which makes it hard for the Echoes to sing afterward, and somewhat a challenge for the congregation to keep the eyelids from drooping.

But the Holy Spirit took care of those issues by being present in our midst, and we were able to worship in a great way, by letting the words of the songs remind us of God's Grace, His Healing Power, and His never-failing Promises.

Yes, it was a great afternoon to enjoy the goodness of God with our friends at Gospel Mission Tabernacle.

Brownfield Baptist Church Homecoming

The Echoes were privileged to be a part of Brownfield Baptist Church's 151st Anniversary Homecoming. As Pastor Monte Reed said in his bulletin article, when the church began, people were still having gunfights in the streets." (They still are, but we know what he meant -- it was a long time ago). Look at it another way: In 1860, the Civil War had not yet begun; the church was lit by lantern and heated by wood (or maybe coal); the only air conditioning was an open window.

But while much has drastically changed since that first service 151 years ago, the Gospel of Jesus Christ is exactly the same as then. We gathered to worship the same God as was worshipped in that first service.

After a traditional, and delicious, pot luck lunch, the Echoes began with "I Wouldn't Take Nothing For My Journey Now," one of the older songs in our repertoire, and ending with one of our newest songs, "It Pays To Pray."

A good-sized, receptive congregation made it easy to sing, as they obviously were keying in on the message of each song. That's what it's all about -- each person receiving a personal message from God as each song is sung.

We've been singing at Brownfield periodically for the last 40 or so years, and it's always good to return once again. It was also good to see Billy Green, and his daughter, Theresa, in attendance. Billy was one of the founders of the Echoes from Calvary, back in 1970, so he has shared in some of those Brownfield singings in the past.

Pastor Reed ended the afternoon of worship with the observation that Brownfield Church might not make it to their 200th Anniversary, not that the church closed, but that Jesus may be coming back before then.

But until then, Brownfield Baptist plans to continue being a beacon for Christ in that little part of Pope County, Illinois, America, and the World. And the Echoes will plan to continue to visit with an encouraging Southern Gospel song every once in a while.

Trader's Mall - WKGMA Mini-Convention

The Echoes participated in a Western Kentucky Gospel Music Association (WKGMA) Mini-Convention held at Trader's Mall, near Paducah, KY. The Antiques and Flea Market Mall also contains an auditorium, which is a great place for special events such as the Mini-Convention. It also periodically hosts great Gospel singing by full-time groups, such as Gold City, Dixie Melody Boys, Ivan Parker, Mark Trammel Quartet, and others.

The Mini-Convention featured a large number of soloists, duets, trios and quartet members of WKGMA. The first 2-hour set began at 4:00pm. The Echoes sang just before the end of that set, after which everyone had the opportunity to partake of a delicious steak dinner. Afterward, the Convention continued with additional groups taking their turn on stage.

It's always great for Gospel singers to get together and feast on the messages in the songs, as well as the Spirit in which they are delivered. You're sure to enjoy being a part of that, so watch for announcements of future mini-conventions, or the upcoming Fall Convention in November.

Illinois State Quartet Convention

The Echoes had another great time at the 42nd Annual Illinois State Quartet Convention, held at the beautiful Marion Civic Center. Hosted by the Glorylanders Quartet, this year's convention continued the tradition of top-notch Southern Illinois Southern Gospel singing, along with entertaining emcee Ralph Brandon to tie it all together. The spirit of God was in the house as each group presented an uplifting message of Jesus Christ. If variety is the spice of life, then the evening was very spicy.

In the last few years, a full-time "professional" group is also included on the program. For the Friday night concert in which we participated, that group was a relatively new trio, Freedom. This group will be going places.

Attendance at this year's convention was very good, and the crowd enthusiastically received each singing group. As always, the Echoes selected songs designed to encourage, to comfort, and to lift the spirits of the congregation. It must have worked; after singing, each of the Echoes felt encouraged, comforted and uplifted!

Belleview Methodist Church

Well, now that was a great evening of singing! The Echoes enjoyed singing for the folks at Belleview Methodist Church, in Smith Mills, Kentucky. Pastor Freda Alexander and her congregation made us feel very welcome, as we made this somewhat rare Sunday evening engagement.

We don't normally sing on Sunday mornings or nights, as Twila is the sole pianist for Calvary Baptist Church, where husband Mark pastors. But on this night, the folks at Calvary Baptist did their singing acapella, and the Echoes offered our three-part harmony to present the Message that God had for the folks at Belleview.

At the beginning of the service, David reminded people to listen to the words of the songs and receive the message that each song provided. The smiles on faces and enthusiastic applause for the songs was a good indication that indeed messages were being received.

Everyone also enjoyed the "finger-food" fellowship following the service, too. And Pastor Freda said that we would undoubtedly be asked to do it all again sometime before too long.

This year marks 40 years that David has been offering the Gospel of Jesus Christ with the Echoes from Calvary. It has been 39 years for Sharon and 27 years for Twila. So, singing for Christ has occupied a significant portion of each of our lives. But the blessings just keep getting better and better. It would be great to sing until Jesus returns.

Crusaders for Christ Church

The Echoes travelled to Mounds, Illinois, to participate in the Crusaders for Christ Church's 5th Sunday singing. Each 5th Sunday, the congregation gathers after Sunday morning service for a pot-luck lunch and afternoon Gospel singing.

The Spirit of the Lord was immediately evident even during the congregational singing to start off the afternoon. And that necessitated an immediate change in the song we had planned to begin with. But, that's nothing new for us. Frequently, someone will say something that will bring to mind the lyrics of a song that would better complement what was said. In fact that happened more than once during the afternoon.

After our first set, the next singers were the Gospel Crusaders. This husband and wife duet sang some heartfelt songs, which were made even more poignant as they discussed the medical issues they had been and were currently experiencing. But what came through the most was that they were still relying on God to see them through the valley they are experiencing. That's when a couple more songs came to mind.

So, when we started our second round, the songs "God Wants To Hear You Sing," and "Under Control" were our way of reminding the Gospel Crusaders that their songs must continue and that their faith in God's power will see them through, because He most surely has their situation under His control.

Actually, thinking back about the afternoon, the main theme of our song selection was to encourage, to uplift, and to take one more opportunity to remind people of just how great God is and just how much He loves each of us -- as illustrated by our final song of the afternoon, "When He Was On The Cross, I Was On His Mind."

Keep trusting Him.

Highview Missionary Baptist Church

The Echoes were honored to sing at the dedication service for Highview Missionary Baptist Church. The church was established about 3 years ago as a mission by Walnut Grove Baptist Church, of the Big Saline Association. This service was to dedicate the new Sanctuary and building complex on Feazel Road, in Harrisburg, Illinois.

The event was coordinated and emceed by Dr. John Rogers, the Director of Missions for the Big Saline and Antioch Associations. Pastor Tommy Dutton welcomed those in attendance, and our own Mark Staton delivered the Invocation to start off the afternoon. Rick Humphries, Highview's Music Leader, led the congregation in singing "Victory in Jesus," and Highview's own theme song, "Higher Ground." Giving brief remarks were Mark Smith, the Pastor of Walnut Grove Baptist Church, and Bill Gholson, of Saline Ridge Baptist Church.

After recognition of the various churches who helped in the early days of Highview, Ed Lafferty, Pastor of the First Baptist Church, in Elizabethtown, Illinois, provided encouragement and advice to the congregation, and charged them to dedicate the church to fulfilling the Great Commission of Matthew 28:19-20.

The Echoes then continued the message through songs, including "I'm Rich," "When He Was On The Cross," "Did I Mention," and ending with the charge to "Preach The Word."

The Executive Director of the Illinois Baptist State Association, Dr. Nate Adams, then continued the theme of the responsibility of Highview to continue the Great Commission -- that we can do no less, because of God's unmerited Grace given to each of us. Dr. Adams spoke of once having a mixed breed dog which turned out to be undisciplined, bad tempered, and having no apparent value to the Adams family -- more trouble than anything else. But one day, the dog, because of his misfit behavior, was struck and severely injured by a car. The easiest thing to do with such a worthless dog would be to discard him. The dog hadn't done anything or worked to earn rehabilitation. But the family had mercy on the animal and gave a great price to have the dog nursed back to health.

We, too, do not deserve God's love or mercy. But He also paid a great price, and freely offers His Grace to us. That's what He tells us to share with the world -- the Great Commission. Today, Highview was commissioned to continue that life-long work, in their community of Harrisburg, in their State of Illinois, in their Country of the US, and throughout the world. And the Echoes are also blessed to be a part of that charge.

Saline County Singing Convention

The tradition continues, as the Echoes were the featured singers at the first Saline County Singing Convention of 2011. We say "tradition," because the Echoes have been honored to kick off the Convention every January since 2007.

Also somewhat a tradition, the Convention was hosted by the Rudement Social Brethren Church. Convention President Alma Young welcomed the attendees on a sunny, but somewhat cold afternoon. But it was warm inside, as the convention began with the congregation singing some of the old standards from the "Songs of Inspiration" songbook.

Then the Echoes began telling once again the wonderful story of God's Love in song, beginning with "Reason Enough." Soon, we had everyone practicing their "finger snapping" skills with a fun, but true, song, "Jesus Made A Believer Out of Me." Other songs during the first set included "Under Control" and "Did I Mention."

Then it was time for others to offer a song or two and a piano-organ duet. The Echoes then finished up the afternoon with a few more messages in song, ending the day with a song we had not sung for a good number of years, "When He Was On The Cross, I Was On His Mind." What a thought!

Yes, it was a great day to continue a tradition -- and to bask in the glow of God's Love for us.

WKGMA Fall Convention

These WKGMA Conventions just seem to be getting better and better! The Echoes sang on the final night of the 3-day convention, and the Spirit of the Lord was present, just as He had been on the two previous nights.

There were a total of 13 soloists or groups singing on this particular night. Emcee Darvin Stom, the WKGMA President, kept the pace going, so that the night would not be too long. And Mike Glover ("For Heaven's Sake") and his crew did a fantastic job on the sound for the convention.

A couple of new WKGMA members sang -- "Yours Truly," a trio, and soloist Kendall Vickrey, who sang just before the Echoes. Kendall's sincere testimony and song delivery just primed both us and the crowd, with us starting off with "Jesus Made A Believer Out of Me." We then moved right into "Reason Enough," a song which explains some of the reasons we believe in Jesus Christ. And even though it had already been sung previously this evening, we ended our set with "Did I Mention," which was the debut of that song in our repertoire. Since the song talks about loving Jesus, we tagged the song with an a capella chorus of "Oh How I Love Jesus," with the congregation joining in. Talk about goose-bumps!

It was a very enjoyable evening, especially because of the presence of God in the house. And the folks at our host, Trinity Baptist Church, did their part to make everyone welcomed.

Calvary Baptist Church Homecoming

The Echoes journeyed to Calvary Baptist Church, New Liberty, Illinois, for their annual Homecoming. Mark Staton, Twila's husband, is the pastor at Calvary Baptist. And as the pastor's wife, Twila can be considered a valuable part of that pastorate.

But on this day, Twila moved from the pastorate duty to her Echoes duty, helping provide the singing to present the Gospel in Song.

After eating way too much of that delicious homecoming food, we started singing to a very receptive congregation. Perhaps the up-tempo "I've Got That Old Time Religion" was not the best choice to start with, as it is a little hard to breathe right after eating. But we settled in and had a great time singing about the Grace and Love that Jesus has for each of us. For those who have accepted that Grace, we were reminded that we have Hope, Faith and Love. "I'm Rich" served to provide that reminder.

Homecomings are a great time to reminisce and renew old acquaintances. It's also a great way to remind people about that great homecoming that all Believers will experience one day. We're so blessed to be able to be used to remind people of that.

Aurora Fall Festival

The Fall season brings out many people to celebrate harvest by parades, decorations and other opportunities to get together. What has become somewhat of a tradition for the first Saturday in October, the Echoes once again traveled to Aurora, Kentucky, to sing as part of the outreach program at Aurora Baptist Church.

Perched on a stage which doubles in its spare time as a large flatbed trailer, we were the last group of the day. In past years, the weather has been hot, cool, and just right. This time around, it was one of those cool times -- some would say "cold," as the temperatures were in the low 60's and the north wind blowing fairly strong. David was a little cold, given that he didn't have the foresight to know that a short sleeved shirt with no jacket would not be appropriate attire.

But no matter, it was another opportunity to present the Gospel in song. The church operates a food tent and tables on the parking lot for the many people who are walking by their property during the day. Various members of the West Kentucky Gospel Music Associate provide the dining music from the trailer / stage.

The people come and go during the singing. The words of the songs go out. We don't know the impact of the messages in song on those people. We just know that what goes out in God's name will not come back void.

We enjoyed being laborers in the field in Aurora.

Azotus Annual Homecoming

Tradition continued, as the Echoes returned to sing again at the Azotus Baptist Church annual Homecoming service. We have sung at every Azotus singing since 1971 or 1972. Since the church does not even have electricity, a majority of the years saw us lugging a generator with us to provide the power for sound equipment. Then, with technology improving, we found that a DC-AC power converter did the job very well.

The singing has always been held the last Sunday in August. Most of the years found it hot and humid. This year, both the temperature and humidity moderated, and God provided a cool breeze to help make the afternoon under the big Maple tree enjoyable for all.

After preaching by Mark Staton (Twila's husband) in the church building, everyone moved outside for dinner on the ground, under that big Maple tree. That's also where we set up our equipment. After we finished eating a delicious pot luck meal, we then began bringing forth the Gospel in Song.

It was good to once again be a part of this Azotus tradition. And if the Lord doesn't return before then, it's very likely that we'll be found once again at Azotus on the last Sunday of August, 2011.

Gospel Mission Tabernacle

The Echoes visited with the congregation at Gospel Mission Tabernacle, in Golconda, IL, to help them celebrate a homecoming-style service -- preaching, dinner on the grounds and singing. Pastor Tim Green made us feel right at home, which in reality we sorta were. Sharon and Dorris Thomas attend GMT, so they WERE home.

The Echoes have sung at GMT a number of times over the years, as the church was founded by Billy Green, an original member of the Echoes from Calvary. He left the Echoes in 1975 to devote his entire energies to pastoring GMT. Billy retired a few years ago, at which time Tim Green, his nephew, took over the pastoral duties.

After a delicious meal, it was tempting to close one's eyes and perhaps doze a little. That's why we mixed in some faster, up-tempo songs along with the slower songs. And it must have worked. We didn't see anyone sleep. In fact, we did see clapping hands and raised hands in praise to Jesus Christ. That made it a good day.

Anthony Underwood Benefit - Olmsted

The Echoes ventured "down south" to the Olmsted, Illinois area to participate in a benefit for Anthony Underwood. Anthony is a long-time member of the Glory Road Travelers Quartet, with whom the Echoes have sung many times over the years. Anthony is suffering from an unidentified neurological disorder which affects memory.

Hosted by the WKGMA (West Kentucky Gospel Music Association), the singing was held at Caledonia Community Church. 5 groups, comprised of WKGMA groups and soloists, provided a great selection of Gospel songs that everyone enjoyed during the evening. Appearing were "For Heaven's Sake," "New Harmony Singers," "Echoes from Calvary," "Up Lift," and Sue Steers.

Ending up the Echoes' set, we featured our music video of "He'd Do It All Again." The song, written by Rodney Griffin, is a powerful message that Jesus loves us so much that He would go through the pain and torture of Calvary all over again, if that were necessary for our salvation. The video, put together by David, intersperses video scenes from "Passion of the Christ" to help illustrate the words of the song to help the viewer/listener more fully understand to just what extent Christ did suffer for our sins.

It was a good evening for WKGMA friends to get together to help a fellow singer and friend -- and to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ once again.

Antioch Association Revival, Golconda

The Echoes were honored to be asked to sing for the opening night of a 1-week Revival for the Antioch Baptist Association churches in Illinois. The Golconda 1st Baptist Church was the host for the revival services. Tim Sadler, Director of Evangelism for the Illinois Baptist State Association, was the evangelist for the revival. Tim is the son of Paul Sadler, who pastored at Golconda 1st Baptist for a 10-year period during Tim's growing-up years.

The Echoes began by singing "I've Got That Old Time Religion In My Heart," followed by "Written In Heaven." David then sang about God's goodness to His children, "Thank God For Grace." "Preach The Word" then encouraged people to be more powerful witnesses for Christ. They then ended with an encouraging word for anyone who is going through troubles or trials, with a song that reminds us that God has everything "Under Control."

Tim then began his message by reminiscing about the yards he had mowed while growing up in Golconda, and the lasting friendships he had fostered. He also shared a story about Lon Baker, who was one of the founding members of the Echoes from Calvary. One day, while doing some custodial work in the church, Lon was talking with Pastor Paul, while Tim was listening. Lon proceeded to tell Paul that he had to finish up his work because he had to go to the "dam picnic" that afternoon. Tim couldn't believe what he was hearing coming from Lon's "potty mouth." Of course, Tim didn't realize that Lon worked at the Lock & Dam 51 in Golconda, and they were having their annual employee picnic that afternoon.

But after the thinking back to times past, Tim began preaching a powerful sermon about the need for workers in the field today. He preached about the need for concern for winning people to Christ now, before it's too late. He encourage people to go out to do what one of the songs the Echoes sang during the service, "Preach The Word."

It was a great start to a week of revival. And that's what the Echoes strive to do each time we sing, to perhaps help revive people and to encourage people through the Gospel in song to be on fire for God.

Saline County Fair - WEBQ Radio Tent

The Echoes joined a number of other groups and soloist in The Big WEBQ Tent at the Saline County Fair, in Harrisburg, IL. The tent, located on the main entrance walk, was in an excellent location to expose a lot of people to the Gospel of Jesus Christ in song. And since this was "one price for all" on the rides, there were a LOT of people walking by. Some of them stopped by to listen, too.

First on the stage were the Nehrkorns, who kicked things off in a grand way. Following them were the Glorylanders. Rindy Nehrkorn (daughter of Dee and Dianne Ozment) was filling in for her mom, Dianne, who was with their son and daughter-in-law awaiting the birth of Dee and Dianne's first grandchild. And while the Glorylanders were singing, the message came that little Marli had indeed entered this world. Contratulations, Dee and Dianne. Don't spoil Marli too much. (And forgive us if we've misspelled any names).

Linda Guest was then up to sing several solo numbers, followed by emcee Alma Young for additional solo renditions.

Next up were the Echoes. During this set, we debuted two songs on our repertoire -- "Under Control" and "Jesus Made A Believer Out Of Me." Both were well-received by the crowd.

Finishing up the first round were the Voices of Praise, who continued with additional messages in song.

Then it started all over again, with each group or soloist singing a few more songs. This time around, Robin Sowells arrived after getting off work and sang several inspirational-style selections.

By the time it was over, the lights had been turned on, the breeze had died down, the bugs were drawn to the lights, and the Gospel had been powerfully proclaimed -- a great way to spend an evening at the Fair.

Pope County All-School Reunion

The Echoes returned to the Pope County Courthouse Lawn in Golconda, Illinois, to participate in the 2010 Pope County All-School Reunion. We say "returned," because the Echoes first sang in this location in the early 70's for their Annual Appreciation Singings that they held for several years.

This time around, it was to sing for the kick-off Gospel Singing that the All-School Reunion committee planned. Also appearing at the event were "Joe and Friends," of Harrisburg, IL, and "Cross Harmony," of Metropolis, IL.

The Echoes kicked off the evening with a number of songs to uplift Christ. David even allowed the crowd to get involved, as he invited them to wave for the camera. The photo subsequently appeared on the Echoes' Facebook page (www.facebook.com/echoesfromcalvary).

God blessed the evening with beautiful weather -- might even go so far as to call it near-perfect. That helped remove any distractions and focus on the message in each of the songs. And as we gather to reminisce about times past, it's a good time to think about God's goodness.

Following the Echoes were "Joe and Friends." We've sung with them before, and always enjoy their old-time country-flavored songs. They sing some of the songs we heard as we grew up, as well as original compositions by Joe Irwin (the "Joe" of the group). Their ministry primarily is nursing-home based.

The final group for the evening was "Cross Harmony" of Metropolis. This trio sings in a similar style (and songs) as the Echoes. They did a fantastic job of sharing the Gospel, too. And we really appreciate being able to use their sound system (and their sound engineer, Brandon). The Echoes had not had the opportunity to sing with Cross Harmony before, but we hope we get to once again before long.

We're all ministers, as David reminded everyone as he introduced our last song of the evening, "Preach The Word." We were honored to have the opportunity to minister once again at the Pope County All-School Reunion.

McCracken County Fair

Did anyone say it's been hot the last few days? Well, it sure was as the Echoes traveled to Paducah, Kentucky, to participate in the Gospel Singing night at the McCracken County Fair.

Also appearing at the event were the Liberty Boys and For Heaven's Sake. Darvin Stom, President of the West Kentucky Gospel Music Association, served as emcee for the evening.

The Liberty Boys kicked it off with a number of songs that took the audience back to the Southern Gospel Quartet style popular in the 50's. These gentlemen have been singing just about as long as the Echoes -- well over 30 years. And they were "hot" in more ways than one this time around. We always enjoy singing with the Liberty Boys.

The Echoes were next on the program. After taking the stage, we quickly located the best position to take advantage of the fans strategically placed on the stage. David must have been overcome from the heat from the beginning, because he ended up to Sharon's left (which is opposite the way we normally stand). But off we went, with the up-tempo "He Forgot More Than I'll Ever Know" to start it off. We sang a mixture of some of our older songs, along with a couple of newer ones. Actually, with the fans , it was cooler on-stage than in the grandstand, even with the sun on our backs for a good portion of the time.

After ending our set with "I Rest My Case," For Heaven's Sake took the stage to conclude the evening with their brand of contemporary/country gospel. They, too, mixed the new and the old. And we all appreciated them, because Mike Glover of For Heaven's Sake had set up all the sound equipment (and fans) in the hottest part of the afternoon, so all the rest of us had to do was walk on the stage and sing. We really appreciate you, Mike!

At the conclusion of the evening, Darvin announced that there are plans for the Gospel night to be repeated next year at the McCracken County Fair. So, keep an eye out for it next June. And if you go, you might want to bring a fan.

Glory Bound Christian Entertainment

The Echoes made another trip to Stella, Kentucky (near Murray) to sing about Jesus once again.

Joe Lawrence, the coordinator for Glory Bound, had the Echoes paired with The Grants. Mike, Donna, and their daughter, Agnie have that good harmony and sincere spirit to help bring to life the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We always enjoy singing with the Grants.

Normally, a Glory Bound event is held in the Goshen United Methodist Church Family Life Center. But this time around, the Center had been decorated for a wedding reception on Saturday, so we moved to the church itself for the singing.

It's amazing how God uses those who are willing to be used. As Joe explained, he has no musical talent, and his wife Rene won't let him try to sing. And the other member of the Glory Bound crew, Pat is in the same boat as Joe, with regard to musical talent. But God has placed those three in a position to operate this music ministry of Glory Bound, proving that God has a sense of humor. Their ministry also includes a weekly radio program, featuring that great Southern Gospel message.

So, when God wants you to serve Him in some capacity, He'll provide the necessary talent. All you have to provide is the willingness.

WKGMA Spring Convention

The Echoes really enjoyed the singing and fellowship at the 2010 WKGMA Spring Convention. This event was held at Trinity Baptist Church, in Paducah, Kentucky. Pastor Brown and his congregation made the Association feel very welcome -- especially with the finger-food fellowship after the Friday night singing.

The evening was filled with inspired songs from seven groups or soloists, who each prompted enthusiastic responses. Raised hands, amens and spiritual applause greeted the message in the songs.

The Echoes sang a brand new song, never before having performed in front of an audience -- "Written in Heaven." We had originally planned for our second song, "He'd Do It All Again," to be sung with a video accompaniment that David had created from "The Passion of the Christ." However, there was no suitable place to project the video at Trinity, so we did it the old fashioned way. In any event, the message of that song was clearly understood by those hearing it -- that Christ loves us so much that He would go through the suffering of the Cross once again, if necessary, for our salvation. But Praise God, it was enough the first time!

2010 Illinois State Quartet Convention - Marion, IL

The Echoes had the opportunity to kick off the Friday night session of the annual Illinois State Quartet Convention. This is the 41st year for the event, where groups from all over Southern and Central Illinois converge for a multi-night celebration of Gospel Music.

As has been over the past several years, the venue was the beautiful Marion Civic and Cultural Center, in Marion, Illinois. If you haven't been to that facility, you should check their schedule and go enjoy a program there.

Groups also appearing on Friday evening included the Muehlenbeins, the Baker Family, the Gospel Messengers, the Messengers N' Harmony, Living Proof, Voices In Praise, our hosts The Glorylanders, and the featured professional group, Naomi and the Segos.

If you didn't receive a message from God during the evening, then you weren't listening. God speaks in many ways, including through song. So, listen up!!

Trader's Mall - Paducah, KY

Moving on down the road from our previous singing on the same day (Legacy Care Center), the Echoes arrived at Trader's Mall, just off I-24 at the US 68 Exit. There we joined a number of other soloist and group members of the West Kentucky Gospel Music Association for a late afternoon and evening singing convention.

Drawing numbers to determine the order that everyone would appear, emcee Mike Glover then introduced each group or soloist as they came to the stage to sing a couple of songs. After about 12 different "acts," everyone broke for a time of fellowship and a delicious rib-eye steak dinner at the on-premises restaurant.

Then, after dinner, everyone then drew new numbers and the singing started all over again. It was a grand afternoon / evening of great Gospel singing. The Echoes had the evening rockin', as we ended up our evening set with "I'm Rich."

We surely are!!

Legacy Solana Alzheimer's Care Center - Paducah, KY

The Echoes visited with and sang for the residents of Legacy Alzheimer's Care Center in Paducah, Kentucky. This was the first visit to Legacy by the Echoes, and we had a great time. The residents were very attentive and sang along with us on some of the "old standard hymns" that we interspersed with our normal Southern Gospel current repertoire. Since there was no piano in the area where we sang, those old standards were sung acapella, or as David said, "Italian for ain't got no piano."

Archie Watkins, formerly of the Inspirations, recently recorded a song "He'll Remember Me." Although most people with Alzheimer's Disease can't recall most aspects of life, it is truly amazing that one of the things that they seem to always remember are the words to the hymns they grew up with. And that was exhibited as we sang at Legacy. But at the point in time where a person invites Jesus into his or her heart, it's guaranteed that no disease -- or even the forgetfulness of Alzheimer's -- will ever take away the deep-down ingrained love and assurance that Jesus provides. We saw proof of that in the faces of the residents of Legacy.

We were blessed to have experienced that.

Dixon Springs Baptist Church

The Echoes returned to Dixon Springs Baptist Church after a 2-year absence. This time around, we were the featured guests at the monthly Praise and Worship service.

It was nice to have one of the Echoes' charter members, Billy Green, with us. David played for Billy to sing "What A Friend We Have In Jesus." Billy invited his sister, Barbara Winders, and Donna Owens to sing harmony with him. Afterward, Billy and David wondered how many notes David had played for him from the period 1971 through 1974 -- quite a few, we would imagine.

Others also offered musical selections during the Echoes' break. And we all enjoyed good food and fellowship in the church fellowship area after the singing. (It IS a Baptist church, so that's almost a prerequisite!).

Bonnie Green Memorial Benefit

The Echoes were one of five groups who gathered at the Golden Circle Center in Golconda, Illinois, to remember Bonnie Green. Bonnie died on December 26, 2009, from cancer.

Bonnie was the wife of Billy Green, who was one of the founding members of the Echoes from Calvary back in 1970. Billy and Bonnie also labored in God's vinyard for many years, as they ministered first at the Gospel Mission, in Golconda, and then established the Gospel Mission Tabernacle outside Golconda. After Billy's retirement, they both continued to have a significant presence in the Golconda community.

Our own David McGan was honored to be asked to emcee the evening. And those singing were also happy to lend their God-given talents to help provide the community an opportunity to contribute to a lasting memorial for Bonnie.

Singing for the event were Joe Irwin and Friends, Thelma Cruson, The Echoes from Calvary, Lowell "Butch" Gowins, and The Baker Family. They all sang to an enthusiastic full house, where people enjoyed the singing and the open refreshment center. There's nothing better than listening to great Gospel music and eating delicious home-made cookies, brownies and other snacks.

A very generous offering was collected midway during the evening. As David put it, the first 4 "acts" were singing in preparation to give; and the Baker Family wound up the evening in "Celebration" of the generous offering.

Billy Green spoke at the conclusion, thanking those in attendance. He commented that the songs truly ministered to him, that the message in each song served to bring him comfort. So, that was another "benefit" of the benefit singing.

That's just like God. He uses songwriters to minister to us. If you have a trial in your life, put on some Gospel music and listen to the words. God will speak to you and give you comfort and direction through those songs. We guarantee it; it's happened time and time again for us, too.

Saline County Singing Convention

Keeping a tradition established over the past few years, the Echoes from Calvary were the featured guest singers at the first Saline County Singing Convention of the new year. Since assuming his role as President of the organization, Harold Hicks has booked the Echoes to appear at the January singing, and has held it at the same location, the Rudement Social Brethren Church on Rt 34 south of Harrisburg, Illinois. As usual for January, it was cold outside, but the Spirit was warm in the building.

While many similar events have seen declining attendance over the years (or have even ceased to exist), the house was almost full at Rudement. If you like to sing, attending a convention is a good opportunity, as anyone who wishes to offer a couple of numbers is invited to do so.

After a couple of congregational songs, the Echoes took to the mics for several songs offered to a receptive crowd. Then it was time for others to sing or play musical instruments. It was good to see Alma Young once again and hear her sing. Alma served as President of the Saline County convention for a few years prior to Harold Hicks assuming that role. Harold's father, Earl Hicks, was the long-time President of the Convention and also a very close friend of the Echoes. We all miss Brother Earl, but Harold is doing a good job carrying on the tradition.

It was a good afternoon, enjoying the great gospel of Jesus Christ in song, with old friends. You're invited to attend a convention, too. Glory Bound Christian Entertainment

The Echoes returned to Stella, Kentucky, and the Glorybound Christian Entertainment venue at the Family Life Center of the Goshen United Methodist Church.

Joe Lawrence has a strong calling for such a ministry in the Murray, Kentucky area, creating an informal, comfortable atmosphere to share Jesus Christ through Southern Gospel singing.

There was a lot of activities going on in the area, and the crowd was somewhat sparse. But those who attended this singing truly knew that God was in the building.

The Echoes "practiced" a little, singing some of our older songs. Joe said that he had really enjoyed the "practice session."

We ended the evening with everyone gathered around the piano, where we all sang Christmas carols before joining hands and dismissing in prayer.

God was once again glorified through the obedience of Joe Lawrence and his team at Glory Bound.

WKGMA Fall Convention

The Echoes enjoyed participating in the Fall Convention of the West Kentucky Gospel Music Association. The 3-day event was hosted by Briensburg Baptist Church, near Draffenville, Kentucky, and featured over 20 WKGMA groups and soloists, with the Echoes appearing on Friday night.

Other singers appearing that night were Higher Praise Quartet, Gracesong, Larry Norton, Darvin Stom, The Farmers, Phyllis Mitchuson, The Grants, and The Erwins.

As can happen when different groups sing, our 3-song line-up required a last-minute substitution, as Gracesong sang one of our scheduled songs, "He Forgot More Than I'll

Ever Know." But that's OK. A quick visit to the sound booth resulted in our substitution of "Whatever It Takes." No need to duplicate the message in song by repeating a song, although since the Lyrics are the message, it wouldn't have mattered should we have repeated that message. But might as well get as much "message" as we can into the evening.

From the reaction of the crowd, a good time was had by all, as God was present and saw fit to bless the messages which came forth that evening.

Aurora Days

The Echoes returned to Aurora, Kentucky to sing "on trailer" at Aurora Days. This annual singing takes place during the community's Fall celebration (Aurora Days) and is sponsored as an evangelistic outreach by Aurora Baptist Church.

Thousands of people converge on Aurora during this annual event and thus the fields are ripe for harvest. The people of Aurora Baptist Church take advantage to provide a popular food booth (as a fund raiser for the church) at their location along the main road (and parade route). They also pass out Gospel tracts as people walk by their location. A friendly smile is readily offered. Tables and chairs are provided for folks to enjoy their food purchases. At this "outdoor diner," various Gospel groups provide the Gospel of Jesus Christ in song while the diners eat.

The Gospel groups or soloists sing to an itinerant audience, many times to very few people, who mostly appear interested only in eating their food or maybe taking a break to rest their feet. Are they listening to the Gospel? Are the efforts of the various singers worthwhile?

One of the songs that the Echoes sang this year is "Just One More Soul." The lyrics include "If just one more soul were to walk down the aisle, it would be worth every struggle; it would be worth every mile." We don't see people "walking down the aisle at events like Aurora Days. Is anyone listening? Does anyone care?

We sing because we have been called by God to minister to hurting people, to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ to a hurting world. Are our efforts worth it? Yes, yes, yes!!! We may never know what impact we may have on a life until it is revealed to us in Heaven. One of Rodney Griffiin's songs, "Faces," perhaps says it best. It talks about dreaming of arriving in Heaven, whereupon Jesus greets us and then "He showed me the faces of the ones who'd come because of me."

That's why Aurora Baptist Church hosts their event each year at Aurora Days. That's why the Echoes from Calvary and others from the WKGMA volunteer their time each year to sing at Aurora Days. We may never know here on earth what our impact may have on a life. But we're not doing it for rewards here. We know by faith now that our efforts are not in vain. We'll know in good time, first hand, the particulars of those who have been touched in some way by our ministry. That's enough for us.

If you have been touched by a song through the ministry of a singing group, or by the words of an individual, perhaps you might share that with them or as a testimony about how God has touched you. In that way, you, too, can pass on how good God is and fulfill your small part on the mission field.

Azotus Baptist Church - Azotus Community

Well, the old Maple tree (I had called it an Oak tree previously) in the yard of Azotus Baptist Church survived last winter's ice storm. Like a lot of us, it's a little worse for wear, but still providing shade for dinner on the grounds and afternoon Gospel singing.

Twila's husband, Pastor Mark Staton of Calvary Baptist at New Liberty, IL, brought the morning message at the once-a-year service. Then, the congregation moved to the row of tables set up outside the church. All kinds of food began to appear, from catfish, to barbecue and fried chicken, along with potato salad, baked beans, corn -- and, of course, a great variety of desserts.

After being tempted by all of that (and eating a good portion of it), it was perhaps a little more difficult for the Echoes to sing some of those up-tempo good foot-stompin' hand clappin' songs. But we did our best, along with those slower ones to provide a well-rounded presentation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Echoes have been coming to Azotus each year since 1972 or 1973, and in that entire time, the message of Jesus Christ has not changed one bit.

And you know the best thing? It will never change.

Will the old Maple tree survive what's in store for it in the coming year? Will each of us? I don't know about the old Maple tree, but for those who have Jesus, we may not know what the future holds, but we know Who holds the future.

First Baptist Church - Rosiclare, IL

The Echoes helped our friends at Rosiclare First Baptist Church celebrate the church's 60th Anniversary, as we "sang for our supper" at a Burger and Hot Dog supper at the church.

Roy Lee Baker, the pastor of the church, is the son of Lon Baker, a long-time member of the Echoes. Lon sang bass for the Echoes from 1970 until his retirement in 1993. As you saw in an earlier blog, Lon went home to be with his Lord last year.

When food is present, Baptists tend to gather, we've found. And this was no exception, as the church was filled to near capacity to enjoy the food and the sharing of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in song.

One special episode during our singing was Roy Lee joining Sharon and Twila in singing "Somebody Prayed For Me," with David on the piano. That song has a special place in Roy Lee's heart, since there were indeed a lot of people praying for him some years back as he battled -- and conquered -- cancer.

Congratulations, Rosiclare First Baptist, on your first 60 years. May you continue to have many more -- until the next coming of Jesus.

Macedonia Baptist Church BBQ

The folks at Macedonia Baptist Church in rural Pope County host a very popular Bar-be-cue fundraiser each year. This African-American congregation tradition has been going on for as long as any of us can remember.

We guarantee that the beginning of the afternoon worship service was pretty close to what Heaven will be like. The service began with a holler to the folks in the picnic grove that the service was about to begin. Then, a spontaneous accapela singing of "When We All Get To Heaven" served to remind everyone that Heaven will be a mixture of colors, all singing praises to God.

A period of testimonies soon served to change the song selection that had been planned. One after another spoke of the theme that Jesus is all you need, that Jesus will see you through any problems that come your way, that Jesus is there for you and that you need Him.

The Echoes thus started their part of the service by singing a brand new song for us, Squire Parson's "Everything You Ever Need." Of course, we followed that one with other songs that all seemed to build on the theme of the testimonies and worship that demonstrated that God was truly present in that building. (God undoubtedly likes great barbecue, too).

We thank our friends at Macedonia for hosting a truly worshipful afternoon in the community --and for providing that famous good barbecue and fixin's.

WKGMA Spring Convention

This year's Spring Convention of the WKGMA (West Kentucky Gospel Music Association) took place at Spring Bayou Baptist Church, near Kevil, Kentucky. For a large part of its existence, the convention was held in various locations in Paducah, Kentucky, with the last several years at Trinity Baptist Church in Paducah. The leaders of the WKGMA thought that they would try taking the convention "on the road" to different venues in Western Kentucky. Thus, the convention moved a little westwardly to Kevil.

The Echoes sang this year on the beginning Thursday night of the 3-day convention. Emcee (and Convention President) Darvin Strom kicked it off with the congregation singing a medley of Praise and Worship, blending old familiar hymns with newer P&W songs.

The groups and soloists then took the stage, to present the Gospel in Song to the enthusiastic audience. As always, the convention was an enjoyable worship experience, while showcasing some of the best Gospel talent in the area.

WKGMA "Gaither Style" Benefit

Perhaps we've always wondered what it would be like to participate in a "Gaither Homecoming"-style event. Well, we came close to it, as the Echoes joined with other WKGMA (West Kentucky Gospel Music Association) members at Briensburg Baptist Church in Draffenville, KY. The event was also shown live on the Marshal County Cable TV system, channel 28.

The event was a benefit for a group of youth and their pastor, Darvin Strum, from Lakeview Baptist Church, near Draffenville, who will be going on a mission trip to Poland later this year. Darvin is also the current President of WKGMA.

The Echoes were honored to be "showcased" at the event. That means that we sang one song prior to the "Homecoming Choir" special. The crowd enjoyed "I'm Rich," and clapped along to that toe-tapping message.

Then it was the WKGMA Choir's turn to present the Gospel Message in song, as we all joined together to sing a number of "old standard" songs, such as "I Wouldn't Take Nothing For My Journey Now," "Had It Not Been," and "He's A Personal Saviour."

Now we can say we've experienced it. Now we're looking forward to doing it again!

Illinois State Quartet Convention

A good crowd greeted the Echoes at the 40th Annual Illinois State Quartet Convention in Marion, Illinois. This is one of the premier Gospel events in Illinois each year. It has been hosted by the Glorylanders Quartet for years. Dee Ozment, of the Glorylanders, has been faithful to keep the Convention going, along with help from his wife, Dianne, and many others.

The Echoes were first on the program and got the crowd going with some new songs, including "I'm Rich" and "Preach The Word." Of course, we also included some other songs we had been singing for a little while. But all of them contained the everlasting message of hope that only Jesus can give.

It was good to see our old friend, Jim Beatty (only "old" in years having known him). Jim served as emcee, standing in for long-time emcee Dean Stephenson, who is battling cancer and was unable to attend. Prayers for Dean are appropriate, but it's 100% certain that he will receive God's healing, and we'll be singing with him again, either here or in Glory.

Thanks to everyone for a another great convention. The Echoes look forward to participating again next year.

Saline County Singing Convention

The Echoes started 2009 as the featured guests at the Saline County Singing Convention. This is the third year in a row that the Echoes were selected by the Convention President, Harold Hicks, to kick of the Convention year. The Echoes are humbled to have this special honor.

Held at Rudement Social Brethren Church, in the settlement of Rudement, Illinois, the convention was well attended with just about a house full of people. Numerous people participated with songs, piano solo's or instrumental offerings.

The County Singing Conventions have in large part ceased to exist in many areas, but the Saline County Singing Convention is going strong, thanks to the dedication of people like Harold Hicks, who is carrying on the tradition of his father, Earl Hicks, who was the president of the Convention for many years.

New Year's Eve

The Echoes ended 2008 with new friends at Faithway Baptist Church, in Corydon, Kentucky. Pastor Dwight Cox and his wife, Janice, (who is a very close friend of David's wife, Mary Jane), were very good hosts for the evening.

The Echoes enjoyed ending the year in what has become a tradition for us. Only two or three times in our 37-year history have we not been singing for the Lord on New Year's Eve.

We're thankful to God for allowing us to sing to the people at Faithway and to Pastor Cox for a very inspiring message on being "FAT" Christians in 2009 (Faithful, Available, Teachable). The evening ended with a Candlelight service, which allowed each person to testify to God's goodness and how He has blessed each. As each person spoke, he/she lit a candle. By the conclusion of the service, the darkened church had once again become lighted by the members of the congregation's candles. We each can be a light to the world in 2009.

Lon Baker Is Home

Lon Baker, who sang bass with the Echoes from Calvary for the first 23 years of it's existence, went home on Saturday, November 29th.

One of the most requested songs at an Echoes singing during his tenure as bass was "It Will Be Worth It All." Well, Lon now knows first-hand what made it worth it all. Now, he's in that Heavenly Choir, where "For Ten Thousand Years, we'll sing 'Amazing Grace. It will be worth it all when we get home."

LON'S OBITUARY

GOLCONDA, Ill. — Services for Jesse A. “Lon” Baker, 86, of Golconda will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Golconda with the Rev. Roy Baker officiating. Burial will be at Prospect Cemetery.

Mr. Baker died Saturday at Pope County Care Center in Golconda.
He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran and worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Golconda and sang with the Echoes of Calvary Quartet for 23 years.

Surviving are three sons, Larry Baker of Golconda, Joe Baker of Lincoln and the Rev. Roy Baker of Rosiclare; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Freda Mitchell Baker; two daughters, Doris Woods and Mary Ann Hansen; three brothers; seven sisters; and one grandchild. His parents were the Rev. Joseph A. Baker and Lula Vandergriff Baker

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Aly Funeral Home in Golconda and after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Hodgeville Cemetery Association, Rural Route 2, Box 319, Golconda, IL 62938.

WKGMA Fall Convention

The Echoes travelled to Trinity Baptist Church in Paducah, KY for the annual WKGMA Fall Convention (West Kentucky Gospel Music Association). A good crowd turned out to hear 8 different groups or soloists in an evening of great Gospel music. The Lord showed up, and the enthusiastic audience responded well the various messages in song presented by the WKGMA-member groups.

Murray Gospel Explosion - July 1st

We helped started the week of celebration of our nation's birth with a Gospel singing in the Central Park Amphitheater in Murray, Kentucky. Singing with us for the evening of Gospel music prior to fireworks were the popular Smith Family Trio of Fulton, Tennessee. A great crowd enthusiastically received the Gospel in song from both groups.

The gospel event was sponsored by the Bank of Murray and was one of many simultaneous activities in the Park -- a great family venue. The evening was capped off with a gigantic fireworks display.

Gaither Suites at Westpark - June 30th

Our close friends, the residents of Gaither Suites Assisted Living Center in Paducah, invited us into their home once again for an after-dinner evening of Gospel singing. As usual, the Echoes sang some of our favorite songs, and then invited the residents to call out their favorites from the hymn books passed around in the "parlor."

We always enjoy visiting with the residents afterward, shaking hands and offering words of encouragement. Actually, the most encouraging words come from them. We'll be going back before too long.

Pleasant Hill General Baptist - June 24th

We visited with the folks at Pleasant Hill General Baptist Church for their annual Homecoming. Although it started out as a rainy afternoon, which resulted in the noon meal being held in the church, we sang up a storm inside, while the rain subsided outside.

It was good to see both old and new friends, as we had not been to Pleasant Hill for a good while. Everyone enjoyed a good Spirit and fellowship during the afternoon.

Glorybound Christian Entertainment - June 8th

The Echoes continued a pretty busy Spring season, returning to Stella, Kentucky (near Murray) and the Glorybound Christian Entertainment venue. Always held at the Goshen Methodist Church Fellowship building, and hosted by Joe Lawrence, we always have a good time singing to attentive and appreciative audiences at Glorybound.

This time, we sang with two soloists -- Jeff Prater and Ivan Hughes. Both men have beautiful voices and a great testimony. We enjoyed very much sharing the evening of Gospel Music and worship with them.

There for a while, it was "iffy" if we were going to be there. Sharon's youngest daughter, Tammy, is expecting Sharon's 6th grandchild any time, and Sharon was on Grandmother-Madelynn sitting duty when the big event's time comes. But, the stork waited, and Sharon was at Glorybound, rarin' to sing.

No Singing Notes For Some Time

Gaither Suites at Westpark - November 18th

From the March of Dimes Benefit concert earlier in the afternoon, the Echoes travelled across town to sing once again at an evening performance at the Gaither Suites Assisted Living Center, in Paducah.

Our good friends there once again filled the "parlor" for a time of singing, testimony, singing, piano playing, singing, and then some sing-along singing. Did we mention that there was singing?

The Echoes always enjoy the warm reception that we receive from the residents, who so graciously invite us into their home to enjoy the Gospel in Song. It's like a big family getting together -- which, in a real way, it is. We're all a part of The Family of God.

We'll be going back again during the first part of 2007.

March of Dimes Benefit - November 18th

David spent part of his birthday with the Echoes singing at the 2006 Annual March of Dimes Benefit Gospel Singing. This year, the event, coordinated by Barney McNeil, was held at Grace International Church in Paducah, Kentucky. The Echoes are one of a few groups who have supported the annual March of Dimes singing, ever since its inception in 2001.

By the way, Barney recently joined the West Kentucky Gospel Music Association as a promoter of Gospel Music. Welcome to the WKGMA, Barney, from the Echoes from Calvary, your fellow members!

The two-day event features a large number of area gospel talent, ranging from contemporary to good ole Southern Gospel.

Honeycomb Church of God - November 11th

The Echoes sang with Mike Hadfield at the Honeycomb Church of God, as they hosted a chili supper and singing as a fundraiser for the international Church of God Youth Missions.

The chili was delicious, the desserts were to die for, and the singing was food for the soul. Mike Hadfield writes a lot of the songs he sings, and he has some GOOD songs. He's also an accomplished musician, who programs all his accompaniment using keyboards, guitar, midi connections -- he's a talented guy, to say the least!

The Echoes found it easy to sing to the congregation, as the smiles were as bright as the Spirit was real during the evening.

The pastor, Harold Miller, invited the Echoes to be the featured singers at Honeycomb's New Year's Eve service. So, we'll look forward to returning in a few weeks to worship once again with the folks at Honeycomb.

WKGMA Fall Convention - November 4th

A great line-up culminated the third night of the 2006 WKGMA Fall Convention on Saturday night, November 4th. Trinity Baptist Church, in Paducah, Kentucky, once again served as very enthusiastic hosts for the event. Phillip Smith, WKGMA President, emceed the event and kept the evening moving along with quite a selection of quartets, trios, duets and soloist, each singing praises to God, and blessing the good crowd in attendance.

The Echoes were received very warmly, especially with people amening and raising their hands in praise to God, as we sang "He'd Do It All Again." In fact, the entire evening was very spirit-filled and worshipful. It was repeatedly said that this convention was probably one of the best ever.

That makes us doubly-anxious for the 2007 Spring Convention to get here, which once again will be hosted by Trinity Baptist. Watch our Schedule for the date, and plan to be with us.

Bethany General Baptist Autumn Service - October 21st

The Echoes appeared at Bethany General Baptist Church, on Route 34 in the Hicks Community of Hardin County, Illinois, for their annual "Autumn" Service. This event includes decorating the church in Fall colors, and dressing up in "old timey" clothing for some, to celebrate God's Goodness during the Harvest season.

David "dressed up" in his overalls and fit right in with Pastor Stan Pennell, who was similarly attired.

It was a good evening of inspirational singing, testimony and fellowship. The after-service meal was also an enjoyable part of the evening, too.

Gaither Suites at Westpark - October 7th

Those residents at Gaither Suites at Westpark Assisted Living Center just can't seem t get enough of good Southern Gospel singing with the Echoes from Calvary. We were asked to return once again -- the second time this year -- to provide the Gospel in Song to a full house in their "parlor" area.

We followed our "tried and true" formula of singing some of our more current songs, then going back into the hymnal and singing requests of the old standards. This is always a popular segment. We then end the evening with a final message from our newer selections.

The smiles on faces, and the kind words as we greet the residents after the singing, indicate that we'll most likely be going back again and again.

Saline Care Nursing Home - September 30th

It was back to the Saline Care Nursing Home for the Echoes, to sing to the enthusiastic residents there. Don't let anyone tell you that these people are "over the hill," or anything like that. In fact, many of them will NEVER "Be Over The Hill," as one of the Echoes' songs attests. (Come hear us sing sometime and request it, and you'll know what we mean).

David's Aunt Marie Bryan is a resident at Saline Care, and was part of our official "cheering section." David's Maltese dog, Tessa, also attended, and was a very popular visitor for the residents.

The Saline Care residents almost sang us to death! They also really got into David playing "Keep On The Firing Line" on the piano, and singing along to Twila and David playing "Amazing Grace" and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" on the organ and piano.

The Saline Care folks know how to respond to Southern Gospel singing, and always make us feel so welcome in their home. We're looking forward to going back in January 2007.

Triple L's - Thursday, September 21st

After spending last weekend at the National Quartet Convention, the Echoes were anxious to sing again. We had the opportunity to do so, as we made a return appearance at the Triple L Senior's group monthly get-together at Immanual Baptist Temple in Henderson, Kentucky (David's home church).

Triple L stands for "Living Life & Loving It," and the lively senior's group at IBT does just that. They get together regularly for a delicious meal and fellowship. The entertainment can be very diverse in nature, but the food is ALWAYS the greatest. This time around, it was Apple Dumplings, Monkey Bread, all kinds of desserts, along with Fried Chicken and numerous other delights that made it hard to sing after eating. David shamelessly put in a plug for some Apple Dumplings to go, and ended up taking a few home with him. Sharon and Twila were more reserved and ate all their meal before singing.

Great food, Christian Fellowship, the message of Jesus Christ via great Southern Gospel songs.... A great way to spend an enjoyable evening.

Cedar Grove Social Brethren Church - September 3rd

After a gap of several years, the Echoes returned to sing to our good friends at the Cedar Grove Social Brethren Church, 4 miles north of Glendale, Illinois. Jerry Wells has returned there as pastor, after a short pastorate in Michigan. It was good to have Jerry "back home" in Southern Illinois.

Jerry used to sing bass with his wife and sister in a family group several years ago. So, on "We'll Soon Be Done With Troubles And Trials," we invited Jerry to sing along with us. He did great! David had to ask how much the church was paying him; we might want to hire him away to sing with us!!

Great Food, Great Fellowship, Great Worship in Song.....

All in all, in every way, it was a great day!

Glorybound Christian Entertainment - September 1st

We made another return visit to Glorybound Christian Entertainment venue at Goshen United Methodist Church Family Life Center, in Stella, Kentucky (west of Murray, Kentucky). This was our third visit this year. This time around, Joe Lawrence had lined up a good evening of Gospel singing, with a new family trio, and a soloist, along with the Echoes.

There was a good number of enthusiastic attendees, and we enjoyed the evening very much, as always. We'll be looking forward to returning again before too long.

Azotus Church Homecoming - August 27th

The Echoes returned for the 35th year to participate in the once-a-year church service at the old Azotus Baptist Church, in the Azotus community in a very rural area south of Bay City, Illinois.

Azotus Church was established in 1848, but has not had regular church services for many years. However, once a year, descendants of the church congregation and families of those buried in the church cemetery gather for a worship service, dinner on the grounds and afternoon Gospel singing.

The morning message was delivered by Twila's husband, Mark. After a delicious pot luck lunch, the Echoes sang under the shade of a huge oak tree for about an hour. Just as we were finishing up our last song, it began to sprinkle rain. Not long after we loaded up our equipment, it began raining harder, and eventually came a deluge of over 3 inches in less than an hour. But the skies had held off pouring out the deluge until after another Azotus afternoon was complete.

Saline County Singing Convention - August 6th

The Echoes travelled to Pankeyville, Illinois (near Harrisburg) and the Pankeyville Baptist Church, for the monthly Saline County Singing Convention. This event has been going on since the early 1900's and is a good opportunity for regional and local groups to share the Gospel in Song with others.

A number of soloists sang between our two sets of music and the Blessings of the Lord came down during the service.

We appreciate Alma Young, President of the Convention, for her dedication to helping sustain Gospel Music in the Southern Illinois area.

Rend Lake Visitor's Center - August 5th

For the second summer in a row, the Echoes travelled to the Rend Lake Visitor's Center, near Benton, Illinois, to sing at their Summer Concert series. The Corps of Engineers sponsors this summer music event.

Held outside in an amphitheater setting, a number of people sat out in the warm, summer evening, to listen to the Gospel in song. Beginning a little before sundown, we sang until well after dark.

Our friend, Alma Young, sang a couple of songs to give us a little break, and we all enjoyed the evening under the stars.

We appreciate the Corps of Engineers for their sponsorship of this summer series and look forward to participating again next year.

Saline Care Nursing Home - July 22nd

The Echoes made a first appearance at the Saline Care Nursing Home, in Harrisburg, Illinois. David's Aunt, Marie Bryan, is a resident there, and gave a special invitation for us to come visit and sing to her and her friends.

The common area at the nursing home was pretty full with residents, family members, and staff. We sang a number of songs, and were happy to see some of the residents clapping their hands to the beat of the song and being blessed by the words.

At the conclusion, several of the residents invited us back, and we will be doing so this fall. We'll be looking forward to seeing them again and sharing the Gospel with such an appreciative and responsive audience.

Elizabethtown Baptist Church - July 8th

Not many churches in this area can say they have been spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ for 200 years. But the Elizabethtown Baptist Church, in Elizabethtown, Illinois, celebrated its 200th anniversary on the weekend of July 8th and 9th.

The Echoes were privileged to be asked to sing as part of the multi-day celebration at the church. So, on Saturday afternoon, we stood under a tent-covered stage to sing to people gathered around to listen to Gospel singing, eat ice cream, pie and other complimentary goodies.

We taxed our memory somewhat, as we had been asked to sing for a 2-hour period. But we made it. Part of the time, we "went back in time" to sing some old standard hymns acapella, just like they might have done 200 years ago when the church was first getting started. (David said that acapella meant "too poor to afford a piano." So, as the audience would call out a song, we would do our best to sing at least one verse. We had a ball, as did most everyone else.

Congratulations, E-town Baptist, on this milestone event in your work for Christ! May you continue until He returns.

Gaither Suites at Westpark - July 1st

We made another return engagement to sing to the residents of Gaither Suites at Westpark Assisted Living Center (formerly Paragon), in Paducah, Kentucky.

As always, the residents made us feel right at home. The meeting area (parlor?) was filled this time with a very appreciative number. As we have made it a practice there, we sang a while, and then passed out song books and invited the residents to call out their favorite hymn. That's always a popular segment of our service.

We hope to get on the busy schedule at Gaither Suites again soon, as we always enjoy worshiping with these wonderful senior citizens.

Oscar Baptist Church Homecoming - May 21st

The Echoes made our first appearance at Oscar Baptist Church, in Oscar, Kentucky, for their annual homecoming celebration.

The 10:00am starting time necessitated getting up early for the pretty long trip to get to Oscar. But singing to a full house of enthusiastic worshipers made the getting up early well worth it.

We'll be looking forward to a return visit to Oscar Baptist.

Glorybound Christian Entertainment - May 19th

The Echoes made a return appearance at Glorybound Christian Entertainment's event at the Goshen United Methodist Church Family Life Center, in Stella, Kentucky. This is about the 4th time we have enjoyed singing to friendly folks, in a dinner club atmosphere.

Appearing with us were The Moreheads, of Monkey's Eyebrow, Kentucky. Although we are both members of the WKGMA, and have sung in the same areas, this is the first time we've had the opportunity to sing on the same program. And what a joy it was! If you get a chance to go see the Moreheads, you'll be in for a treat. Wes Morehead writes a lot of their material, and he is one more good songwriter!

WKGMA Spring Convention - May 5th

The Echoes participated in the West Kentucky Gospel Music Association's Spring Convention, which took place once again at Trinity Baptist Church, in Paducah, Kentucky. Talmadge Martin emceed the Friday concert, introducing a number of WKGMA groups and soloists.

A good time was had by all, as they say. And it was real good to see John Clark, of the New Harmony Singers, in attendance, only a couple of weeks after suffering a stroke. John's miraculous recovery is truly a miracle of God.

Illinois State Quartet Convention - April 21st

The Echoes from Calvary met up with a number of our "singing buddies" at the Illinois State Quartet Convention. Held in the beautiful, new Marion Civic Center, in Marion, Illinois, the event features Southern Gospel groups from all over southern and central Illinois. Hosted by our friends, The Glorylanders, the Echoes look forward each year to this event, where we can not only sing the praises of Jesus Christ, but listen to others do the same. This is about the 30th year or so that we've been participating.

It was good to see that God still has his hand on emcee Dean Stephanson, who is conquering cancer, and Dee Ozment, of the Glorylanders, who has recuperated very well from a stroke suffered last year.

Glorybound Christian Entertainment - March 16th

The Echoes once again were featured at the Glorybound Christian Entertainment program. This time around, Glorybound now promotes their program at the Family Life Center at Goshen Methodist Church, in Stella, Kentucky, about 4 miles west of Murray, Kentucky.

A good group of people enjoyed the evening of the greatest entertainment there is -- Southern Gospel singing.

We're already booked to return to Glorybound on Friday, May 19th. Come out and enjoy the Gospel of Jesus Christ in song with us. We'd like to see you there.

Paragon Assisted Living Center - March 4th

We made a return trip to sing to the great folks at the Paragon Assisted Living Center in Paducah, KY. The community room area of the Center was full of lively seniors who enthusiastically responded to the Gospel in song. We stood around the piano and invited the folks to call out songs from hymnals for us to sing. They always seem to enjoy that segment of our program the most.

We'll look forward to going back to visit again before too long.

IBT Triple L's - December 15th

The Echoes shared the Gospel of Jesus Christ with the senior group of Immanuel Baptist Temple, the Triple L's. After a delicious pot-luck meal, we sang a number of songs, and also gathered around the piano for some Christmas carols. (That's "Christmas" carols, not "Holiday" carols).

As we close out the year, we're especially thankful for all the people who have attended our concerts and helped us worship the Lord. Maybe we can worship with you in the coming year.

Gospel Mission Tabernacle - Bill Carter Benefit - December 2nd

The Goodness and Mercy of God, as well as the generosity of friends and neighbors, was well-represented, as the Echoes took part in a benefit singing for Bill Carter, of the Dixon Springs/Pope County area of Illinois.

Bill has been dealing with melanoma for several years. But his testimony was the highlight of the evening. Bill's faith and trust in God is greater than any disease that might attack him. And that has been a big part of his survival thus far. God's healing power, which is far greater than man's understanding, can overcome. As a song we used to sing says, "God has it Under Control."

A local youth group ended the evening with a drama presentation, which depicts Satan's attempts to control our lives. But turning to Jesus can break the chains that Satan uses to bind -- a very powerful message in a contemporary format.

The love that the community has for the Carter family was amply displayed, as over $2000 was raised to help Bill and his family pay for medical-related expenses. And as another song we sang that night states: "Even In The Valley God Is Good."

Kornbread Junction - November 22nd

We returned for our second visit of the year to Kornbread Junction at Tunnel Hill, Illinois. Phillip Morris hosts a weekly Gospel Night on Tuesdays at the Junction, which is part of his Bed & Breakfast operation at Tunnel Hill.

There was a good crowd of people, sitting around tables, enjoying Beans & Cornbread, Chili, Hot Dogs -- good food and fellowship. Attendees came from all around, including Harrisburg, Illinois, Creal Springs, Illinois, and other "parts unknown."

David played a piano special, with Phillip Morris once again slapping out a rhythm on the old upright bass. That made for a good hand-clapping time. Phillip's granddaughter sang a couple of songs, and David accompanied Joe Irwin, from Harrisburg, who also sang a couple of songs.

The shows at Kornbread Junction slow down a little bit in December and January, but there is usually entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights. Of course, the Bed & Breakfast is open year 'round. We're already looking forward to the next batch of Bean Soup and Cornbread -- along with more great Gospel singing.

WKGMA 2005 Fall Convention - November 5th

The Echoes had a great time with a bunch of our WKGMA singing buddies (West Kentucky Gospel Music Association) at the Saturday session of the WKGMA Fall Convention, at Trinity Baptist Church, in Paducah, Kentucky. This is the third year for Trinity to host the Convention, and they all do a marvelous job of making everyone feel so welcomed. All in all, about seven groups or soloists sang the Glory down on this Saturday night finale of the 3-day Convention!

The Echoes were chomping at the bit by the time we got up to sing. We started off with the entire New Testament in 3 minutes, 15 seconds, as David likes to say, all told in the up-tempo song, "It's Jesus," which had been requested for the Convention. Then, we slowed it down and featured Twila with a reminder of the power of prayer, as we sang, "You Keep Praying." We ended with a rousing rendition of "Damascus Road," that some in the audience standing and clapping along to this spirited song. We truly are on our Road to Damascus, always waiting for God to reveal His will in our lives. But what a time we can have on the journey!

Glory Bound / Weaks Center - November 3rd

We showed up at the Weaks Center in Murray, Kentucky, to participate in a weekly Christian Entertainment event sponsored by Glory Bound Ministries. This was the second appearance at the Glory Bound program; the Echoes also sang on the program in November 2003.

On the program with the Echoes was Divine Appointment, a husband and wife duo who sing original material with a decidedly Country-Christian flavor.

The event is currently held in the Weaks Center, which is the location of the Caldwell County Senior Citizens Center. The audience sat at tables, listening to good Gospel music and partaking of light refreshments -- it could be called "Snack Theater," I suppose.

We'll be looking forward to returning again, and Joe Lawrence, the head of Glory Bound, said it would not be two years before we come back. We'll be ready!

Aurora Days - October 8th

It was a beautiful Fall day in Aurora, Kentucky. The Echoes joined with several other gospel groups to perform outdoors under a cool, partly sunny sky, at an event sponsored by the Aurora Baptist Church.

Each October, the little Kentucky Lake town of Aurora has a fall festival, when the town population temporarily grows to many times its normal size. Food booths, craft booths, flea markets, and a parade make it a popular yearly destination for a lot of people.

We arrived as the Canaanland Quartet was singing, and followed them for a 1-hour set. Then, it was Tarnished Gold who sang until parade time. Other groups were scheduled to sing after the parade.

The stage was on a large flatbed trailer, and the area took on a dinner concert atmosphere, as people sat around at tables eating the delicious food that the church was selling as a fund raiser. David wanted to be sure they didn't run out of Bean Soup and Cornbread, but commented after the song "I Wish I Could Have Been There" that perhaps Jesus could multiply that like he did the loaves and fishes. Anyway, David found that there was plenty of Beans and Cornbread available.

What better way to spend a beautiful, outdoor, fun day, participating in the tradition of celebrating God's blessing on a bountiful harvest. It just doesn't get much better than that!

WKGMA Mini-Convention - October 7th

We joined with our friends, the New Harmony Singers, Alma Young, and the Peacemakers in a Western Kentucky Gospel Music Association (WKGMA) Mini-Convention. The singing was held at the Union Association of Social Brethren Camp, located on Route 145 at Delwood, Illinois.

First up were the Echoes, who sang some older songs, some requested songs, and some of the current songs we have been doing recently. Next, was the New Harmony Singers, who were minus most of their band and a singer. But Alma Young filled in for the missing singer, and the piano player carried the load on the musical side.

Alma Young then sang a few songs which blessed the heart, as always, and then she introduced the Peacemakers, of Paducah, Kentucky, as the final group to sing.

The end of the singing took on tones of a Gaither Homecoming, as all the singers gathered on the stage for a rousing rendition of "I'll Fly Away." It almost made one ready to "fly away," should the Lord return.

It's always good to sing on the same program with other people who love Gospel Music and love sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Song. And it's always good to see those in the audience who are enjoying the blessings of the Lord.

Gaskins City Baptist Church - September 10th

The Lord really was among us as we worshipped with Pastor Teddy Ray Price and an enthusiastic congregation at Gaskins City Baptist Church., in Harrisburg, Illinois.

It's always a blessing to see people worshipping the Lord with upraised hands of praise. David urged everyone to pay particularly close attention to the words of the songs, because God had a message for each individual in attendance. And one song might provide a different message for each person. Well, from the expressions on people's faces, God sure did speak to people!

And the vocal response to our audience participation number, "I Am," was the best we've seen/heard. Join us sometime, and you'll get a chance to participate in that song, too.

Anyway, we came away feeling as if "we'd had church!" We're looking forward to doing it again.

Azotus Baptist Church - August 28th

The Echoes returned to Azotus Church, south of Bay City, Illinois, for our annual participation in Azotus' once-a-year worship service. We've been singing at the Azotus annual homecoming every year now on the 4th Sunday of August, since the early 1970's.

The church no longer even has electricity, and thus we've always had to take a generator to power our sound equipment. Last year, we found an inexpensive power inverter, which allows us to run our equipment off a vehicle battery. That makes it real simple.

Twila's husband, Mark Staton, delivered the message at the morning worship service. Then, tables were lined up outside under a gigantic oak tree, where an abundant spread of food provided a delicious "dinner on the grounds" for lunch. Then, the Echoes presented the ever-same Gospel of Jesus Christ in song, standing under that same gigantic oak tree, to those gathered around.

Azotus is a standing invitation for the Echoes each year, so if the Lord tarries, we'll probably be back again next year to do it all again, on the 4th Sunday of August.

Kornbread Junction - August 2nd

Homespun Dinner Theater at its finest! That's what we found when we sang at Kornbread Junction, in Tunnel Hill, Illinois. Phillip Morris, proprietor, has created a down-home country atmosphere to compliment his Bed & Breakfast operation in Tunnel Hill. Kornbread Junction offers a variety of musical entertainment, with Tuesdays being Gospel Night at the Junction. And all you can eat Beans & Cornbread is always on the menu. (Jerry Kirksey of The Singing News would be in Heaven (he likes to eat good ole home cookin').

The Echoes sang to an appreciative crowd sitting at dining tables around the homey stage area. But no matter where we sing, the Message is the same. And the folks at the Junction heard the wonderful Gospel of Jesus Christ.

This was the first time for the Echoes from Calvary to sing at Kornbread Junction, but according to Phil, it won't be the last. We look forward to going back before too long.

Upper Salem Baptist Church - July 31st

We had a very enjoyable and blessed evening as we returned to Upper Salem Baptist Church, just north of Metropolis, Illinois. It was good to be back with the folks at Upper Salem, after about a 12-year gap since the last time we sang there.

Testimonies at the conclusion of the service indicated that lives had been touched through the songs and spoken words, which is what it's all about! Some of the songs reminded people that God is always faithful, that He is always there to hear our prayers, that he has in store for us the best things for our lives -- and we can trust that He'll be faithful. We ended the evening with "You Keep Praying" as the best advice for guiding our lives.

We don't want to forget to thank the ladies of the church for the delicious dinner enjoyed by everyone after the service. Almost made us want to stop singing early, but as David commented, sometimes we like to sing even better than we like to eat -- especially when the Lord is blessing.

Thanks, Upper Salem, for a very enjoyable evening worshiping the Lord.

Paragon Assisted Living Center - July 23rd

The Echoes from Calvary returned for a second visit to sing for an appreciative group of senior citizens at the Paragon at West Point Assisted Living Center in Paducah, Kentucky. We were scheduled to start at 6:00pm, but the commons visiting area was just about full by 5:45pm. It's not hard to get us to sing at the drop of a hat, so with a good crowd gathered, we began early.

We sang a number of our current songs, each of which had a message for the residents of Paragon (as they do for any listener). David then sat down at the piano, and we took requests from the group for favorite hymns. "The Old Rugged Cross" was called out immediately, with "Sweet Beulah Land" a close second. "In The Garden" and "Amazing Grace" are always favorites. David played "Keep On The Firing Line" on the piano to an instrumental accompaniment, and the Echoes decided to sing the chorus of that song for good measure.

We then ended the evening with "Even In The Valley" and "Keep On Praying" as a reminder to the residents (and us, too) that no matter what comes our way, we can turn our problems over to God, because He is SO good and faithful to carry our burdens.

We then visited with the residents for a little while and met some people from Kansas City, Missouri, who were visiting one of the residents.

As always, while the residents kept telling us how much of a blessing our singing was to them, we found, as always, that we are blessed to a much greater extent by their smiles and support. We'll look forward to going back again.

New Burnsides Community Church - July 15th

The Echoes from Calvary enjoyed a very good evening of Southern Gospel singing, as we worshipped with a good-sized congregation at New Burnsides Community Church, in New Burnsides, Illinois, on Friday evening, July 15th. Thanks to Mr. Choate, who invited us and coordinated the evening, as we sang at the church for the 2nd time in about a year.

The Spirit of God was evident during the evening, as people worshipped God through up-lifted hands and testimonies. A number of different churches were represented, which made it seem all the more like a little of what Heaven will be.

Rend Lake Visitor's Center Sing - June 25th

The Echoes sang outside on June 25th at the Rend Lake Visitor's Center, near Benton, Illinois. Although it was "95 in the shade," there was a good crowd of about 100 people, who set up their lawn chairs around an amphitheater and listened to 2 hours of Southern Gospel singing by the Echoes from Calvary, with special guest Alma Young.

Thanks to Mike Edwards and the Corp of Engineers for coordinating this summer event. Other singings will be held throughout the summer. Check with the Rend Lake Visitor's Center for details.
